Welcome to the Early Career members group! This is a space for early career ISORED members to connect.

ISORED's Definition of Early Career:

The early career category includes people working in a field relevant to ISORED who are students, are within 10 years of their terminal degree, or who have less than 5 years of experience in the field (i.e., a major career shift, to be defined on a case-by-case basis). Within the early career category, students and other trainees (e.g. post-baccalaureate and postdoctoral fellows) may be eligible for more specific award and funding opportunities.

Rationale:

The Early Career Working Group believes that the early career definition should be inclusive of:

  • Students and other trainees,

  • Independent investigators who only recently achieved independence and may benefit from additional support,

  • Scientists/specialists in non-academic career trajectories who are in the early career stage of their respective careers and may benefit from additional support, and

  • Individuals who were established in a given career and made a significant career transition (e.g. established medical practitioners who begin a research career more than 10 years after their terminal degree) and may benefit from additional support. Note, this would NOT include, for example, an established cancer researcher who has just begun studying radiation as an exposure.

We believe our definition should transparently include non-academic career paths and other alternative career paths. We also believe that though students and other trainees are implicitly in an early career stage, they are a special class who may benefit from additional, more specific awards and funding opportunities targeted to students/trainees.
